Mini Weekend Box Review

I’m always stuck for ideas to entertain my kids, so when I heard about the Weekend Box Club, I jumped at the chance to give it a try! We work full time during the week, so are often busy when it finally gets to the weekend – organising kid friendly activities is usually the last thing on our mind as we struggle to cope with all the regular household chores. Founded by Andy Stephenson in 2013, Weekend Box is a fortnightly subscription box which arrives packed full of themed entertainment for your little ones. There are two sizes – mini (£4.95) and bumper (£7.50) – for this post, we had the pleasure of reviewing a rainforest themed mini box!

From the minute it dropped through our letter box, my 3 year old did not stop talking about opening his ‘prise’! I’d told him he had a surprise coming and we would have lots of fun at Grandma’s when we took it with us. Lately, we’ve been on the receiving end of more and more of his tantrums, so the prospect of having something age appropriate to occupy him was a welcome relief to us!

Upon opening the box, you are greeted by the Weekend Box gang – Wooster, Hattie, Sammy and Oswald (my 9 year old daughter thought the names were cool) – and a small introductory fact file on the current theme. There are even cracker style jokes included, which is my favourite kind of humour! The rest of the contents are split into two activities and colour coded to prevent confusion. Almost everything required for the activities is included, with the exception of scissors and an empty plastic bottle in the case of this box. We chose to try the ‘blue’ activity of making a parrot mask first, as the ‘green’ activity required the empty bottle (which we didn’t have).

Each activity has an instruction card with a difficulty rating and an estimated time for completion. The step-by-step guide includes pictures, allowing an arts and crafts novice (such as myself) to follow the instructions with ease. My 3 year old was very excited at first, but his attention span is not very long and he can’t be trusted with the use of scissors. Although this box is marketed towards 3-8 year olds, this particular activity is possibly more suited to the older end of that range. He was happy to draw with the crayons provided, but he was up and down from his seat a lot and daddy was left to do the cutting and sticking. That’s not to say he didn’t enjoy the finished product though, but it was his sister who posed for the photograph as she was the only one who would stand still for long enough!

Once we have acquired an empty bottle, we will attempt to ‘grow a rainforest’ using the contents of the ‘green’ bag. I may leave this one to my 9 year old to run, as she was keen to get involved in an activity with her brother. Follow my Instagram or Twitter for updates on how that one turns out!

Overall, I think the Weekend Box is a brilliant way to keep your kids entertained and definitely something I would try again. It’s even something which could come in handy when visiting relatives, as they can take their box with them, making activity planning easier for those looking after them.
