Ah, that age old question made famous by the Pirates of the Caribbean movies! Not something I thought I’d ever ask, but now at the forefront of my mind since my visit to the new Revolución de Cuba restaurant in Glasgow last Wednesday!
I was invited along, with a host of other bloggers, to sample their fantastic range of tapas, sip their delicious cocktails and check out the large variety of rum they have to offer. We were also given the opportunity to try our hand at selecting spices and creating our own pork rub to take away and test for ourselves - It really was a fantastic opportunity to immerse ourselves in Cuba for the evening!
I knew the event would be amazing, even before it kicked off, when a delightful surprise appeared in the post – an invite in the form of a cookie! Packaged in a beautiful little box and labelled with the date and location, there was no way I was forgetting this event! I’m assuming the cocktail depicted, in biscuit form, was a tasty mojito – and this was exactly what awaited us on our arrival!
We were given the chance to do a bit of networking before being whisked over to the spice station and treated to a lovely helping of pulled pork, which had been flavoured with both zesty and spicy tastes. After smelling a variety of the spices on offer, we each picked the aspects which most appealed to us and created our own personal pork rub, to flavour the meat just how we liked it. Packaged in a miniature mason jar, this was the perfect wee gift to take away – I’ve already wrapped it and stuffed it in Paul’s Santa Sack, he is the chef of the house after all!
Presented with a fresh cocktail (not sure what was in it, but it was tasty), we were then ushered over to a side area and treated to a special rum tasting! I’m a whisky drinker usually, and have never really tried rum before, but I’m so glad I gave it a chance – even with the numb face that accompanies it! Two very knowledgeable members of staff were on hand to introduce a different rum, one at a time, and teach us how to drink it properly. I was surprised at the variety of tastes, ranging from spices to toffee, with one even smelling like bananas before the burning sensation took over! We tried six in total:
The Kraken
El Dorado 12
Diplomatico
Wood’s
Bacardi 8
Wray and Nephew
I’m hoping my future father-in-law passes around some of his rum selection this Christmas, I’m pretty sure I could get Paul to like it too, especially with these amazing flavours!
For the final part of the evening, we were taken to another side area and given a huge variety of tapas to sample. The staff took this opportunity to step back and let us talk amongst ourselves, while enjoying all the wonderful treats on offer. Everything tasted superb, but it was the churros that really stole the show, especially with the amazing caramel sauce – I’m a fan of them normally, but these are the best I’ve had yet and these alone could keep me coming back!
All in all, I had an absolutely fantastic night and met some really amazing people (who I'll hopefully run into again at some point)! Revolución de Cuba is also a great place to visit and would be perfect for a date, or larger gatherings. The staff are all extremely friendly and happy to help with any questions you may have – I even got a hug on my way out the door, which was lovely! I came home singing their praises and can’t wait for the chance to take Paul back with me, I know it would be right up his street!
What a fab post chick - you haven't missed a thing! It was so lovely to meet you and hopefully bump in to you again at some point in the near future!
