It seems like I’ve been away from the blog for ages, and I’ve honestly struggled to find any sort of motivation or desire to share anything with anyone. You can read about the circumstances surrounding my absence here, but in the interests of moving on and putting the past behind me, I thought I’d jump straight back in with another delicious food post!
‘Fun Lunch Friday’ became a bit of a thing with me and Sarahjane, but this only works well because we spend so much time together at work. As I love trying out new restaurants whenever I have the chance, I was keen to arrange a recurring event that would allow both Paul and myself to visit places with other friends too - hence, the ‘Glasgow Burger Tour’ was born!
Now, Scott and Karen are close childhood friends of Paul’s, but various work and family commitments now prevent us from spending much time together as a group. I’ve also been keen to improve relations since my rather bat-shit crazy bridezilla behaviour in the run up to our wedding! The Glasgow Burger Tour seemed like a fantastic opportunity to get together semi-regularly, while also enjoying a huge range of different restaurants as we gradually work our way through the Glasgow burger scene – first on the cards, Bread Meats Bread.
A fellow blogger, Kris, had been raving about how amazing the food was the last time we met, and when you can order a burger served inside a glazed doughnut, I knew this place would be high up on the visit list! Situated on St. Vincent Street, and close to all my usual Glasgow haunts, we had absolutely no trouble finding the place, even with the torrential downpour and mad barefoot dash through the city due to unsuitable footwear! Unfortunately, they don’t take bookings and are quite a small establishment, so I would recommend visiting at non-peak times to ensure prompt service – we ended up waiting a good twenty minutes for a table of four to become available.
When the food actually arrived, however, we were not disappointed, the burgers all looked absolutely fantastic and the side dishes were very generous:
Scott ordered the ‘Angry Bird Chicken Burger’ - £7:
‘Buttermilk fried chicken burger topped with crushed chillies, jalapenos and buffalo sauce. Served in a small sesame bun. Served with pickles, lettuce and tomato and harissa mayo.’
I can’t describe how his tasted, but every few minutes resulted in some deep, cooling breaths and the rushed consumption of his strawberry milkshake, so I can only assume it was rather hot!
Karen ordered the ‘Wolf of St. Vincent Street’ - £10:
‘Our Signature Burger! With American cheese, Crispy Bacon, Pulled Pork in BBQ sauce, crispy fried onions and 'Nduja with Sriracha Mayo.’
Her only complaint was that it unexpectedly arrived in a toasted brioche bun, which she wasn’t particularly keen on, but the rest of the burger was great.
‘Double smashed burger with American cheese, candied bacon, spicy beefy mayo' and crispy fried onions inside a grilled glazed ring Donut.’
After wondering how on Earth the pairing of beef with donut could possibly work, I’m pretty sure he was pleasantly surprised, especially as he’s not stopped talking about it all weekend!
I am not a fan of beef, so didn’t really fancy the Luther Burger, but when I saw that there was also another donut variety on the menu (‘Maple Bacon Cheese Donut’ - £5.50), I just had to have it!
‘Grilled glazed donut with candied bacon & cheese; topped with spicy mayo and more bacon.’
Although I felt like I was cheating on the whole ‘burger tour’ idea, given that this wasn’t exactly a burger, I am not disappointed with my choice – the donut was absolutely delicious! I would even go as far to say that this is how donuts should all be eaten from now on ha! It’s not designed for being picked up, so make sure you have a knife and fork on hand, but a quick clean of the digits with some hand sanitizer solved my problem with the sticky glaze.
All in all, Bread Meats Bread was a fantastic choice to kick off the first (hopefully of many) visits to the various burger joints in Glasgow. I’m also especially pleased that the overall cost of mine and Paul’s meal came to under £25, even with sides and drinks included. There is such a huge variety of options on the classic burger theme, that there really is something for everyone on the menu – I’m particularly interested in trying the classic Canadian ‘Poutine’ on my next visit.
