I’ve never thought of myself as a food blogger specifically, but it seems my last couple of posts have taken me further in that direction – who doesn’t love sampling delicious dishes whenever the opportunity arises? When I was contacted to try out the new menu being launched at Browns, on George Square, I jumped at the chance to see what tasty goodies they had to offer!
I was allowed bring along a plus one, so who better than Sarahjane to join me – I know how much she loves this place, and it was also the perfect opportunity for us both to catch up after work. Browns has recently undergone huge refurbishment, so they were keen to show off their downstairs seating area, which now benefits from the recent addition of another bar! The whole downstairs area is also available for hire, making it the perfect place to host private functions.
We were greeted by a host of wonderfully friendly staff, who were on hand to offer us a selection of drinks (including prosecco) and make us feel comfortable for the evening. After having a chance to wander and chat with others, we made our way to a table for the main event – the food!
First course, starters:
This dish was made up of a selection of starters available from the new menu:
Duck Liver Parfait – I’m not sure this is ever something I will love, but the rest of the people around us were demolishing it, so it must have been a hit!
Beef Carpaccio with a Parmesan Crisp – anything with cheese is always high up on my list, I only wish I could have had a whole bowl of the crisps!
Prawn Cocktail – I'm not a huge fan of prawns, but this is a classic favourite, and something I know Paul would love if he’d been there too.
Smoked Salmon Aranchini – I saved this one until last as it was absolutely perfect! I’ve never been a huge fan of salmon in general, but this little nibblet may well have succeeded in converting me. The creamy sauce set it off perfectly, I’ll definitely be ordering this when I visit again!
Next we were treated to a second course, mains:
This time, we had a selection of the new mains on offer:
Fish Pie – again, containing mostly things that I’m not keen on, but cooked to perfection anyway. The pie was made up of: salmon, prawns, peas and a generous helping of mashed potato, and I would definitely order it again if I could remove the prawns.
Tuna Niçoise Salad – I’ve always associated tuna with the overly fishy paste that usually gets shoved into sandwiches and baked potatoes, this little dish suited me much better and has now promoted tuna to my select list of acceptable sea food!
Portobello Mushroom Tart – unfortunately, despite my efforts with this one, mushrooms are totally not my thing. If they had been disguised in some sort of creamy sauce, I would probably have managed, but this was just mushrooms in pastry. If you like mushrooms though, I’m sure you’d love it!
Browns Guinness Steak Pie – A twist on a classic favourite dish, it would definitely be a winner in a bigger portion size!
Finally, we were treated to the last of our three course tasting menu, the desserts:
Only three dishes this time, but this still provided us with enough of an idea what to expect from the new menu:
Rice Pudding with Strawberry Jam – this one was absolutely beautiful. I couldn’t put my finger on exactly which spice was used to garnish it, but Sarahjane is pretty sure it contained nutmeg.
Crème Brûlée – Another classic dish loved by many.
Blueberry Mess – This one is definitely my favourite! I’ve always loved a bit of meringue, and the combination of the creamy blueberry flavours provides a tasty alternative to the usual Eton Mess.
As if the food wasn’t enough, we were also treated to Sarahjane’s favourite – Gin cocktails! As our whole family has been ill all week, I didn’t fancy anything alcoholic, but the staff made sure I didn’t miss out and brought me over a mocktail instead – a passionfruit dream!
Browns is a fantastic place to eat and drink and I can’t believe this was the first time I’d visited! With the central location, it’s also super easy to find and perfect for relaxing at the end of a busy work day, or successful shopping trip. I can’t wait to drag Paul along the next time we can organise a date night, I want more of that Smoked Salmon Aranchini!
What a selection of utter food porn! Agree that Salmon Aranchini sounds divine...and who doesn't like a good cocktail?

ReplyDeleteI'm hoping my work books another event here, I can't wait to go back! :)
DeleteCreme brule and blueberry mess, that just sets my mouth watering! My standard drink though when we go out is orangejuice with lemonade and a slice of lime. :D
ReplyDeleteThe desserts were absolutely delicious! I can't wait until I next get the chance to visit again! :)
DeleteI love Browns and regularly go to the one in Leeds. I can't wait to try some of these from the new menu! I'm with you on mushrooms and prawns so I'll give those a miss. The Guinness steak pie and rice pudding look amazing so I'll definitely try those first I think.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realise there were other ones across the country, I visit Yorkshire quite a lot, so it's great to know there's one in Leeds too! :)
