Beating the Blues with Halloween Treats

September marks the arrival of autumn and the slow build up to the end of the year. The clothes shops are filling up with all the wonderful winter styles, and pumpkin spiced everything is now available, in some form, wherever you go! I usually love this season, but it’s seems tinged with a level of sadness this time around because Thursday marks what would have been the due date of my first pregnancy this year…

My first loss occurred mid-January and, although I was only 5 weeks along, it was still a difficult experience mentally, if not physically. Couple that with my further two losses in March and June, both at approximately 8 weeks gestation, and I’m feeling a little on the down side as the latter half of the year progresses. To top it off, I also got my period this weekend (tmi I know), despite convincing myself that all the obvious early pregnancy symptoms had returned, so I’m not in the best of moods.

I know I should probably wait a while before trying to conceive again, but it’s difficult to manage the feelings of loss and emptiness without attempting to fill them with the obvious solution. I also had absolutely no problem getting pregnant the last three times, so it stresses me out more that this is the third period I’ve had since my most recent D&C, and there’s still no sign of a baby…

I’m reluctant to make this yet another post about how miserable I feel so, in an effort to cheer myself up a little, I thought I’d indulge in a some retail therapy and share with you guys the lovely seasonal goodies that I couldn’t resist picking up!

First up, I took a wee wander into The Body Shop to pick up some things from their new ‘Vanilla Pumpkin’ range for Halloween. Comprising of body butter, hand cream, shower gel and a body shimmer spray, there’s something for everyone! I needed a new shower gel for the house, but I also picked up a hand cream for work after an earlier incident today saw me accidentally using up the last of my current hand cream in one go, and having to rub it in all the way up to my shoulders, just to get rid of it! The scent itself is deliciously creamy and perfect for cosying up in the evenings, now that the weather is getting colder.

Next, I just had to pick up one of the latest Yankee Candles from the new Halloween range – ‘Forbidden Apple’. There’s another two in the range – ‘Haunted Hollow’ and ‘Witches’ Brew’ – but I absolutely love anything apple scented, so it was a no brainer! The smell is so strong, that I’m pretty sure it will fill all three floors of my new house when it’s burning – I hope Paul likes apple as much as I do!

Last, but not least, I couldn’t resist picking up two wee Cadbury ‘Ghooost Eggs’ for myself when I saw them sitting in a ‘2 for £1’ basket! I’ve always loved a good old Creme Egg, so Halloween is the only other time of the year that I can pick one up, once Easter has passed… Although, saying that, Easter things are always stocked from January onwards, so I only really have to last a third of the year without their chocolaty goodness!

While my wee trip to the shops provided me with some seasonal goodies to keep me going, I know I've still got a way to go before I'm totally in a better frame of mind. As long as I'm completely occupied with something (lab work, thesis writing, blogging, eating) I can manage to function like a normal human being, but I still struggle with the thought of being near pregnant people or new babies/mothers. I'm hoping it won't take too much longer to recover, but my feelings are not as rational as my thoughts, and often have other ideas.

What are you looking forward to, now that autumn is here? How do you guys cheer yourself up when everything else seems to get you down?

  1. I'm really sorry to hear about your loss but the first step is self care to make yourself feel better the best way you can and heal and I like do self care as often as possible even if it's having a bubble bath and pampering myself x
