Fun Lunch Friday – Café Andaluz, Glasgow City Centre

It seems like such a long time since our last ‘Fun Lunch Friday’, but with all the crap going on in my life, I’ve not felt much like doing anything fun. Regardless of this, I didn’t want Sarahjane to go off on her work placement without catching up beforehand, especially as I’m going to miss her birthday! So yesterday, I brought in her birthday presents, and we resumed our lunchtime tours of Glasgow with ‘Fun Lunch Friday’… on a Thursday!

The wonderful, well known summer bank holiday, referred to as ‘the Glasgow Fayre’, fell on this weekend, meaning the uni will be shut on Friday and Monday, and we can all enjoy a cheeky long weekend. As such, we switched our Friday lunch plans to yesterday instead, in order to celebrate together. I picked out Café Andaluz, a beautiful Spanish tapas restaurant on St Vincent Place, and we enjoyed a relaxing lunch after a hectic morning of lab work.

I’d been to Café Andaluz a couple of times before, one of which was with my Mum before my hen do, so I was well aware of the menu choices. Similar to many other places in Glasgow, they had a lunch time menu (available Monday to Friday, 12pm to 3pm) which was perfect for our needs, offering three tapas dishes for £12.95 per person. This does slightly exceed our usual budget of £10, but we hadn’t had a lunch date for so long, that the slight increase was worth it!

To save time, we had already pre-selected our menu choices while waiting for our experiment to finish, which was just as well considering we had pushed lunch back by a couple of hours and were absolutely starving! I ordered Patatas Gratinadas (layers of sliced potato baked with garlic cream and mozzarella cheese), Queso De Cabra Al Horno (grilled goats’ cheese topped with orange and chilli marmalade) and Croquetas De Jamón Y Queso (crisp croquettes stuffed with Serrano ham and Manchego cheese), which was also the exact same dishes I’d ordered with my Mum last year – I’m a creature of habit!

We spent the time waiting for our dishes, by fiddling about with the story function of Instagram. I know it’s been around for a while now, but it’s only recently that I’ve actually discovered it is pretty fun! After attempting to get ‘the perfect’ shot of the menu and our surroundings several times, I eventually gave up when our delicious lunch was placed in front of us. I hadn’t quite realised just how much cheese I had ordered, but I don’t regret it one bit!

Every item was cooked to perfection but I particularly enjoyed the goats’ cheese, especially as I had been avoiding soft cheeses while I was pregnant. The croquettes and potato gratin were also amazing, and the extra helping of mozzarella really helped to improve my favourite potato style dish! After attempting to stuff all this wonderful food into my mouth, I was extremely disappointed when I realised I couldn’t finish it all.

Once again, Café Andaluz had not disappointed either of our expectations. Without fail, they always deliver on taste and atmosphere alike! I can’t wait to find another excuse for a visit, perhaps leaving room to sample a dessert next time!

Even though I only saw her yesterday, I’m already missing Sarahjane like mad – I will leave the next lunch choice up to her, but I’m hoping she can organise the next one for as soon as she gets back!

Sarahjane's food pose has returned!
I'm still trying to work on mine!

  1. Sounds like you had an amazing meal at the cafe. Glasgow is really far from where I live but I do want to see the place around and enjoy a meal at this restaurant.

  8. £12.95 for three tapas dishes seems pretty good! I must admit I haven't tried much tapas in the past though. You've inspired me to hunt down a local tapas restaurant now ♥
